Student Jailed For Over-Staying His Visa

A CUMBRIA-based student has received a prison sentence for staying in the UK after his visa expired.

Carlisle Crown Court was told the offence committed by Firas Elhejjaji, 21, came to light after police investigated an alleged neighbourhood dispute in the city.

When Elhejjaji’s documents were inspected, it was initially believed that he was in possession of a fake Libyan passport.

That proved not to be the case.

But at the crown court today (WED), Elhejjaji pleaded guilty to a charge of remaining in the UK beyond the specified time limit, between 5th March and 10th April this year.

Elhejjaji, of Duke Street, Carlisle, was given a one-month prison sentence.

But the court heard he was expected to be released immediately having served the equivalent of a 10-month term following his detention in April.
