A medical examiner has said Bobbi Kristina Brown's face being immersed in water, along with drug intoxication, led to her death.

The daughter of Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston died at a hospice last July after months in a coma.

She was found face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub at her home in Atlanta, six months earlier.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office in Atlanta released a statement on Friday on the death as it prepares to release the full autopsy report.

It said marijuana and alcohol were involved in the death, along with medications used for sedation or to treat anxiety.

However, it said it was not possible to determine whether she meant to take her own life.

The medical examiner determined how the 22-year-old likely died after reviewing documents including medical records and investigative files.

"The underlying cause of death is the condition which starts the downhill course of events leading to death and in this case is the immersion associated with drug intoxication," the office said in a statement.

"Death was clearly not due to natural causes, but the medical examiner has not been able to determine whether death was due to intentional or accidental causes, and has therefore classified the manner of death as undetermined.

A court order had prevented details of the cause of death from being released.

But that was lifted on Thursday by a judge following requests by the media.

In February 2012, Houston died aged 48 from accidental drowning in a bathtub at a hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Authorities said years of cocaine abuse and heart disease played a key role in her death.

Bobbi Kristina - referred to as Krissy by family members - was treated in hospital twice for anxiety after her mother passed away.
