A bakery that received hateful messages after it created a ‘transgender’ Ken doll cake has been praised for standing up for ‘equality’. Freeport Bakery in Sacramento, California, shared a photo of its cake creation showing a Ken doll wearing a pink gown, necklace, flowers and crown on Facebook on August 13. Ken is a Mattel toy doll and the fictional boyfriend of Barbie.
Proud of the ‘buttercream detail’ The bakery was attacked with hundreds of negative comments on its Facebook page. “I applaud you for taking a stance and for being brave to open your arms to equality” One message of support “We noticed a large number of unlikes on our page and realised they were a result of our Ken cake post,” the bakery said. The cake was created for a local group who meets to play dice games.
“A customer requested a Ken doll cake and we were happy to make it; she loved the cake when she picked it up,” the bakery said. Not a political statement “We were especially proud of its buttercream detail so we decided to post a photo of it on our Facebook page, as we do with many of the cakes we design and adore.” Instead of deleting the picture of the cake when it received some negative feedback, the bakery reposted the picture asking for support from its Facebook friends. “We have received that support and so much more from our fans, devoted customers and staff,” the bakery said.
Praise from around the world One comments reads: “Nice job. Lifelike. As an artist, you should always be able to expand your craft! Art is subjective. There will always be haters. Their loss for not being able to accept it as art despite their personal beliefs. It’s a big world and plenty of room for those with good hearts for their fellow citizens.” Another says: “ I think this cake is fabulous! It reminds me of Vita Bohem in Too Wong Foo!! Kudos!” The messages of support have come from across America and around the world. “Sending a big Whoohoo from far northern Minnesota! Love the cake and your common sense through all the brouhaha,” one woman wrote. Another supporter said: “I think what you did is wonderful and will only get you more fans and customers for treating everyone with dignity and respect!
These days are not about man or woman, it’s about simply being yourself and no labels are needed because people need to mind their own damn business and concentrate on their own life… So I applaud you for taking a stance and for being brave to open your arms to equality.”
