Photo & Video: High-rise building under construction collapses in Lagos

A 21-story building under construction has collapsed in the Nigerian city of Lagos, trapping an unknown number of people, local officials and witnesses say. Rescue work is underway.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. on Monday when the 21-story building on Gerard Road in the Ikoyi area came down and completely collapsed onto itself.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said search-and-rescue operations were underway, but it was not immediately known how many people were unaccounted-for.

CGTN Africa, citing witnesses, said about 50 people are believed to be trapped.

“All first responders are at the scene while the heavy duty equipment and life detection equipment have been dispatched,” Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the head of LASEMA, said in a statement.

Other details were not immediately known.
